We are often asked how many countries we have been to. There are many ways to count countries. There are 193 UN recognized countries, 2 UN observer states (Palestine and the Vatican), and 3 countries that have been acknowledged by at least 10 UN countries (Kosovo, Taiwan and Western Sahara). There is also the Traveler’s Century Club (TCC) list of 327 places around the world. The TCC definition of a country is more expansive than just the members of the United Nations because it includes geographic, historic, and culturally distinct places. Northern Ireland and French Polynesia are not “countries” per se, but they are distinct geographic places separated from their country’s mainland.

However, we have many disagreements with the TCC list (such as counting Prince Edward Island as a separate item), so we use a combination of these two lists for our country list that we feel is more useful from a travel perspective.

Non-UN member states we have included in our country count includes Antarctica, Easter Island, French Polynesia, Galápagos IslandsGibraltar, Hong Kong, Macau, Northern Ireland, Palestine, Republic of Artsakh, Taiwan, Tasmania, Tibet, Transnistria, US Virgin Islands, and Wales.
